Ok! now that we’ve gotten St Patrick’s day out of the way, how about something real. This Irish font is called Trathnona and its free for anyone to use (all I ask for is credit for the design). Download it here! https://github.com/insert-smiley/Irishfontclub-trathnona
As before, I’m using the SIL Open Font Licence v1.1. This is a free software licence that permits you to use the font software under a set of conditions. Please refer to the full text of the licence for details about the permissions, conditions, and disclaimers.(https://openfontlicense.org/)
The word Tráthnóna means afternoon (early evening) in Irish and for international font naming reasons I’m leaving the diacritics out.
Here is the Font Specimen (with & without diacritics):
The font is lower case only. It has 144 characters including ligatures, numerals and Western European diacritics. I’ve had a lot of subscribers from the continent so I’ve tried to cater for more languages with this release. Let me know if you would like any specific characters to be added.
Original Source
It was inspired by the writing of scribe Fr Seán O Briain, 1738, from a collection of historical poems currently in the Royal Irish Academy.
Many thanks to Professor Pádraig A. Breatnach for the source and the feedback!
As you might be able to see, I made a few minor changes to the original. Perhaps I will post in more detail about those design decisons in my next newsletter (tell me if you do or do not want to know more about this).
For now, please download and use the font. As with the original, recommended usage would be for devotional and historical poems related to the O’Briens in the 18th Century but whatever floats your boat!
For a quick video on how to download from Github, there’s one on the bottom of newsletter #3
Special thanks to Jason Flynn for the Tráthnóna name!
Really enjoying your work, love the modern edge with the nod to the historical context. I have a background in design so will look forward to trying this out.
